Anti-Racist Theatre Statement, 2024
Spellbound acknowledges that we exist in a white-centered society that has historically elevated certain ways of thinking, living, and being in our world, particularly in the arts. As an arts organization, we commit to actively creating spaces of diversity through an anti-racist lens.
Anti-racism is uplifting the innate humanity and individuality of Black, Latin A/E/O/X, Indigenous, Asian/Pacific Islander, and other People of Color; demonstrating best practices in diversity, equity, and inclusion; and dismantling the systems of white supremacy.
Theater for the very young has a unique ability to reach young people in their most formative years. Therefore, our work should echo and reflect, uplift and celebrate the diversity of our audiences and the communities we work with.
Our commitment to diversity includes not only race, but also ethnicity, gender, age, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, education, marital and parental status, language, and physical appearance. We are working to uplift different ideas, perspectives, and values in our artistic and administrative work, taking into consideration everyone’s lived experiences.
