We’re Hiring!
Set Designer and Devisor/Performer

Spellbound Theatre is seeking two new members of the Lullaby Land team for Devising Phase Three: a Set Designer and a Devisor/Performer.

About the Project:
Lullaby Land celebrates the diversity of languages in our city and mirrors the diversity of artists in the Spellbound ensemble, as we seek to develop Spellbound’s commitment to anti-racism both internally and with our audiences. This show, for 3-6 year olds and their caregivers, takes the universal experience of falling asleep and creates a magical, musical, and mysterious exploration of lullabies in different languages and aesthetics from regions across the world. Lullaby Land is a devised theater project, which means that it was created by artists, or devisors, collaboratively through collective improvisation and play without an original script.

Lullaby Land Set Designer

Salary: $800
Responsible to: Director/Devisor and Producer
Key Collaborator: Puppet Designer
Contract length: Late February - May 3, 2025
Location: New York City / Remote work

Purpose of Role:
The Set Designer will be responsible for all aspects of designing and building sets for Spellbound Theatre’s new mainstage show, Lullaby Land. The set designer will report to the Director and the Producer of this production and work closely with the Puppet Designer to ensure cohesiveness between the puppets and the aesthetic world of the show.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • To design and oversee the purchase and/or construction of scenic elements
  • To attend remote pre-production meetings to flesh out the needs of the set and create a plan for production
  • To create detailed, clean and high quality drawings/diagrams of the set. These drawings will be crucial to rendering technical specs for future productions
  • To have some set prototypes ready by the beginning of rehearsals on Monday, April 28, 2025
  • To have all set design deliverables ready and implemented into the showcase space by Friday, May 2, so the space is ready for the Lullaby Land Phase Three Showcase on Saturday, May 3, 2025
  • To instruct the Stage Manager on how to pre-set the props and any other elements of the set design
  • To provide most of the tools and other specific equipment needed to create the set pieces. Spellbound does not have access to a shop
  • To source materials within the agreed upon budget with the Producer
  • To create set pieces that are lightweight and easy to fold for tight storage purposes
  • To work collaboratively with the Director, Puppet Designer, and Producer to execute Spellbound’s vision
  • Subject to other commitments, the Stage Manager and Producer will be available to assist the designer

Qualifications
  • One year of experience as a set designer in similar theatre projects
  • Strong aesthetic sense and ability to interpret the vision of Spellbound Theatre and the Director
  • Ability to source lightweight materials for low cost, including thrift stores, Materials for the Arts, recycled materials, etc.
  • Technical skills needed to create detailed drawings/documentation of the set design
  • Strong collaborative skills needed to work with a team of Designers, Producers and Directors
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ideally, candidates will have experience using CAD software such as Vectorworks or SketchUp to create technical drawings and ensure the longevity of the Lullaby Land set. If you have these skills, Spellbound Theatre is open to negotiating an additional stipend.
